Barto Helps Lead Statewide Study on Student Attendance

CHRR staff member Caroline Barto was part of an Ohio Attendance Study team that has been studying student attendance for the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. As Erin Joyce reported in a recent John Glenn College of Public Affairs newsletter: “This multi-year initiative included a statewide survey of schools and school districts about how they operationalize the state’s school attendance policies; analyses of student attendance record available through the state’s Education Management Information System (EMIS) system, as well as set of “deep dive” analyses that brought together student attendance records collected at the local level through local student information systems with the state administrative records available through EMIS; and interviews with key staff at the participating school districts.”

Oleson and Lee Contributing to Ohio’s Broadband Initiative

CHRR staff members Mark Oleson and Sungjin Lee also received congratulatory shoutouts from Erin Joyce in the same Glenn newsletter mentioned above. Mark and Sungjin were part of an Ohio Education Research Center (OERC) team contributing Ohio’s Broadband and 5G Sector Partnership Initiative, which involves partnerships with Ohio State’s College of Engineering and Center on Education and Training for Employment, as well as the Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation and the Wireless Infrastructure Association.

New Ohio Longitudinal Data Archives Study Published

A new study on labor outcomes of mortgage payment subsidies has been published by longtime CHRR collaborator Stephanie Moulton, who is a professor and associate dean for faculty and research in the John Glenn College. This scholarship, which you can read about on the Journal of Housing Economics website, was based on OLDA data prepared by CHRR staff member Brian Stamper. Among other interesting findings reported in this study:

  • The receipt of mortgage payment subsidies extends the duration of unemployment in the short term but results in significantly higher earnings and a higher probability of being employed over the long term.
  • Long term improvement in labor outcomes is only observed when mortgage payment relief is provided shortly after the onset of the unemployment shock.
